The caves contain petroglyphs — carvings on the rock surfaces — attributed to the Neolithic and Mesolithic periods, with the oldest estimated at approximately 6,000 BCE. The engravings depict human figures, animals, tools, symbols, and abstract motifs, making this the only known site of Stone Age rock art in India accessible to the public.

Wayanad on Ground

Janotsavam (Wayanad Tribal Festival) — January
An annual festival celebrating the indigenous tribal communities of Wayanad — the Paniya, Kurichiya, Kuruma, Adiya, and Kattunaikka peoples who have inhabited the Wayanad forests for centuries. Traditional music, dance, food, and crafts of the tribal communities are presented.

Onam — August or September
Kerala’s harvest festival, celebrated in Wayanad with Onam Sadhya on banana leaf and pookalam decorations. The tribal communities of Wayanad celebrate with their own traditional customs alongside the wider Kerala observance.

Tribal crafts
The indigenous communities of Wayanad — particularly the Paniya, Kurichiya, and Kuruma peoples — produce traditional crafts from the forest materials around them. Bamboo baskets, cane mats, clay pots, traditional jewellery, and woven items are produced and available at tribal cooperative outlets.

Coffee and spice products
Wayanad is one of India’s primary coffee-growing districts, producing Arabica and Robusta coffee at elevations between 700 and 1,500 meters. The district also grows cardamom, black pepper, ginger, and vanilla. Fresh roasted coffee, whole spices, and organic produce are available directly from estate shops.

Wayanad’s food reflects the hill station character of the district — simple and made from local produce. Kerala meals are the standard — rice, sambar, fish or meat curry, thoran, and aviyal — available at most restaurants. The most distinctive food product of Wayanad is bamboo rice — a rare rice variety found in certain bamboo species that flower and produce grain once before dying. Estate-grown coffee prepared from freshly roasted beans is available at plantation stays across Wayanad.
