Getting around Indian cities by taxi and ride app
In India, "taxi" does not describe a single system. App-based ride services, street hailed auto-rickshaws, prepaid counters, and private hired vehicles all operate differently — with different pricing logic and different levels of reliability for a traveler who does not know the city.
Why use Uber or Ola in India as a foreign traveler
App-based services — Uber and Ola — are the most reliable option for international travelers in most situations. Pricing is calculated digitally before you book, the route is tracked, the driver's details are recorded, and payment can be completed without cash or negotiation.
When to use which transport option in Indian cities
Ride app (Uber/Ola)
Moving between neighborhoods or arriving at a new city. Default for most journeys above 10 km.
Auto-rickshaw
Short distances within a city — under 10 km. Street hailing or app booking.
Prepaid counter
Available at airports and major railway stations. No app availability or late-night arrivals.
Full-day hire
Full-day sightseeing within a city or outstation travel beyond city limits.
Ride apps in India — Uber and Ola
Two primary app-based ride services operating across India: Uber and Ola. Both function similarly — enter your destination, see the fare upfront, select the vehicle type, track the driver, pay through the app or in cash on arrival.
Uber in India for foreign travelers
Uber is the most reliable option for foreign travelers in India. It works with international mobile numbers and international debit and credit cards without registration issues. Uber operates cars, auto-rickshaws, and bike taxis depending on the city.
Ola in India for foreign travelers
Ola is India's primary competitor to Uber and operates on most of the same routes. Ola registration with international mobile numbers can be unreliable. If Ola registration does not complete, use Uber. Once registered, Ola functions similarly to Uber — upfront fare, tracked route, app or cash payment.
How ride apps work in India — booking and tracking
Book through the app before stepping outside or into an unfamiliar area. The app shows driver name, vehicle model, and registration number before arrival. Confirm these match before getting in. Drivers may call after accepting a ride to confirm the pickup point — if you cannot communicate in the local language, share your live location through the app.
What to do if a driver asks you to cancel and pay outside the app
⚠ Never cancel and rebook outside the app
After accepting a ride, some drivers ask passengers to cancel the app booking and pay cash directly, claiming technical issues or offering a 'better price'.
• This eliminates the fare guarantee, route tracking, and your ability to report the driver.
• The correct response: decline and end the ride. Book a new ride in the app from a different driver.
• Also decline if a driver asks you to call or text them directly to arrange a ride outside the platform.
Advance tip in Uber and Ola — not required
Both apps prompt passengers to add an advance tip before the ride is confirmed. This is not required. Adding an advance tip does not guarantee faster pickup. Skip the tip prompt unless you choose to add one after a completed ride.
Auto-rickshaws in India
Auto-rickshaws are three-wheeled motorized vehicles used for short distances within cities. They are the most widely available form of road transport in India — present in virtually every city, town, and market area.
Auto-rickshaw fares in India — metered vs negotiated
Auto-rickshaws are officially metered in many cities. In practice, meters are frequently not used — drivers quote a price before the ride begins and expect agreement before moving. This is standard, not a scam. The issue is whether the quoted price is fair.
A useful estimate: street-hailed auto-rickshaw fares typically range from ₹20 to ₹30 per km depending on the city. App-based auto fares are lower, fixed and shown upfront before confirmation.
How to negotiate an auto-rickshaw fare in India
Negotiate per KM and only if your sense suggests the quoted fare is excessive. State your destination clearly before getting in. Do not enter the auto until the fare is agreed. Once inside, the agreed fare is fixed, regardless of traffic or route.
Booking auto-rickshaws through apps in India
Uber and Ola both offer auto-rickshaw bookings within their apps. This gives you a fixed fare, a tracked ride, and eliminates negotiation entirely. Booking an auto through an app is significantly more straightforward than street hailing.
When auto-rickshaw drivers refuse rides in India
Auto drivers can refuse rides. This is common and not personal. Drivers may refuse if the destination is not on their preferred route, if traffic is heavy, or if the fare does not appeal to them. If refused, move to the next auto.
Communicating with auto-rickshaw drivers in India
Most auto drivers do not speak English. Showing the destination on Google Maps — with the map visible and the name of the place readable — is the most reliable way to communicate where you are going. Type the destination in English and show the screen to the driver. This works across India regardless of the local language.
Other transport options in India
Beyond ride apps and auto-rickshaws, three other transport options are relevant for foreign travelers in India: prepaid counters at airports and stations, street-hailed taxis, and full-day or outstation vehicle hire.
Prepaid taxi counters at Indian airports and stations
Prepaid taxi counters operate at all major airports and at railway stations. These are official counters where you pay a fixed fare to your destination zone before getting into any vehicle. The fare is set, no negotiation happens, and you hand the receipt to the driver rather than paying them directly.
At airports, prepaid counters are located inside the arrivals hall, before the exit. To reach them, walk past touts and informal offers as you exit baggage claim and customs — these are not the prepaid counter. The official counter will have a signboard and a queue.
Street-hailed taxis in India
Traditional metered taxis — availability varies by cities — are hailed on the street and not practical. These are less common than they were before app services became widespread.
Full-day and outstation taxi hire in India
Cabs can be hired for a full day of sightseeing within a city or for intercity travel. Full-day hire is priced by km allowance and hours, with charges for exceeding either. Outstation trips include a per-km rate and may include a driver allowance, toll charges, and state border permits for interstate routes.
When arranging a full-day or outstation hire — whether through an app or a hotel desk — agree and confirm before travel: the total fare, the km and hour limits, whether tolls and driver allowance are included, and what the charge is for excess. If driver tries to change mid-ride, refer back to the agreed terms.
Payment and pricing for ride apps in India
App ride fares are shown upfront and can be paid through the app using international cards or in cash on arrival. Street-hailed Auto-rickshaw is primarily cash. Prepaid counters accept cash or card depending on the counter.
Paying for ride app trips in India
Fare is shown upfront at booking. Pay through the app using any international card or pay the driver in cash at the end of the ride. Toll charges on highway routes are not added automatically in case of outstation travel — these are paid separately at toll booths.
Paying for auto-rickshaws in India
Primarily cash and UPI payments — a QR code is displayed inside many vehicles. Carry small-denomination notes (₹10, ₹20, ₹50, ₹100) for autos. Auto drivers frequently do not carry change for larger notes. App-based auto fares can be paid through the app.
