Ooty

A hill station in the state of Tamil Nadu

Reviewed: 20 May 2026

Ooty — officially Udhagamandalam — is situated at 2,240 meters above sea level in the Western Ghats. The British developed Ooty as the summer capital of the Madras Presidency, building churches, colonial bungalows, and botanical gardens. Today Ooty is Tamil Nadu's primary hill station — a working landscape of tea estates, boarding schools, and Toda settlements.

Places

Nilgiri Mountain Railway (Toy Train)
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the only rack railway in India, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway runs 46 km between Mettupalayam at the foot of the Nilgiris and Udhagamandalam (Ooty) at the summit, via Coonoor. The journey passes through 16 tunnels, across 250 bridges, and around 208 curves, climbing through dense shola forest, tea estates, and narrow valleys.

Timing: Runs daily, verify schedule on IRCTC
Entry Fee: Ticket prices are as per IRCTC

Government Botanical Garden
Established in 1848 by the Marquis of Tweeddale, the Government Botanical Garden spreads across 55 acres on the lower slopes of Doddabetta Peak. Doddabetta Peak
Doddabetta is the highest peak in the Nilgiris. A paved road leads to the summit, where there is a telescope house offering views across the Nilgiris valleys and, on clear days, down to the Coimbatore plains. The peak is frequently covered in mist by mid-morning; arriving early gives clearer views.

Timing: Open daily
Entry Fee: No entry fee

Mudumalai National Park
A wildlife sanctuary at the base of the Nilgiris where the Western Ghats meet the Deccan plateau — part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, the largest protected wildlife corridor in South Asia. Mudumalai is home to significant populations of elephants, gaur, spotted deer, and sambar, with smaller numbers of tigers and leopards.

Ooty on Ground

Ooty Summer Festival — May
Held at the Government Botanical Garden over two weeks in May. The centerpiece is the competitive flower show — display arrangements of Nilgiris flowers and exotic plants created by local horticulturalists.

Thaipoosam — January or February
Observed at the Subramanya Swami Temple in Ooty with processions and rituals drawing pilgrims from across Tamil Nadu.

Toda embroidery (Pukhoor)
A Geographical Indication-protected craft produced exclusively by Toda women in the Nilgiris. The embroidery uses red and black thread on a white cotton base to produce geometric patterns — shawls, stoles, bags, and pouches. Authentic Toda embroidery can only legally carry that name if made by Toda women in the Nilgiris.

Nilgiri tea
Tea cultivation in the Nilgiris dates to the 1830s. The resulting industry today produces Nilgiri tea — an orthodox whole-leaf tea with a lighter, more aromatic character than Assam, with a muscatel note on the finish.

Ooty Varkey
A GI-tagged traditional biscuit of the Nilgiris, produced by Badaga bakers using mava (cooked milk solid), wheat flour, and sugar. Dense, crumbly-hard, and designed to be dipped in tea or chai.

Handmade chocolates
The British introduced cocoa cultivation to the Nilgiris alongside tea; Ooty's homemade chocolate tradition continues at small confectioneries across town.

Ooty's food identity reflects three overlapping traditions: the Tamil and Badaga agricultural communities, the British colonial era, and the proximity to Kerala and Karnataka. The highland climate produces vegetables — carrots, cabbages, cauliflower, potatoes. Standard South Indian tiffin — idli, dosa, vada, sambar, and multiple chutneys — is the everyday breakfast. Filter coffee is the defining drink. The colonial era left behind a tradition of bakeries; bread, pastry, and snacks made by local Christian and Anglo-Indian bakeries.
