Kaziranga National Park — location and key facts
Kaziranga National Park is spread across four districts along the southern bank of the Brahmaputra river. The park hosts the world's largest population of the Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros and over 90 percent of the global Asiatic wild buffalo population. The habitat is a unique combination of wetlands, grasslands, woodlands, and highlands formed by the annual flooding of the Brahmaputra.

Wildlife in Kaziranga National Park
Kaziranga hosts the world's largest population of the Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros, with over 2,600 individuals. Kaziranga also holds over 90 percent of the global wild Asiatic Wild Buffalo population.
Tigers, swamp deer, and birds in Kaziranga National Park
Bengal Tiger — present in the reserve though significantly less visible than the large herbivores. Kaziranga is also an officially declared Tiger Reserve, and conservation surveys have recognized it as having one of the highest tiger densities of any protected area in India, despite its overwhelming public association with rhinos. Swamp Deer (Barasingha) has a significant population in the grasslands. Bird diversity is exceptional — 553 species recorded, including Pallas's Fish Eagle, hornbills, and cranes.
Safari ranges in Kaziranga National Park
Kaziranga is organized into four safari ranges, each with its own entry point and distinct landscape. No private vehicles are permitted inside the park — all visitors must hire authorized jeep safari vehicles from the Jeep Safari Associations at Kohora and Bagori. Every jeep safari vehicle is provided an armed escort.
Central Range — Kohora
The primary range. Located at Kohora on NH-37. Classic Kaziranga landscape of open grasslands, wetlands, and woodland. Highest concentration of rhino and wild buffalo. Elephant safari available at Mihimukh within this range. Most accessible range for travelers staying at Kohora.
Western Range — Bagori
Located at Bagori, west of Kohora on NH-37. Similar grassland and wetland terrain to the Central Range. Good rhino and wild buffalo sightings. This range opens from September 26 onward in limited areas — earlier than the other ranges.
Burapahar Range — Ghorakati
Located south of the main park area in the Burapahar hills. Hilly terrain with semi-evergreen forest — different landscape character from the grassland ranges. Known for Hoolock Gibbon and Bengal Florican sightings.
Eastern Range — Agaratoli
Located at Agaratoli, east of Kohora. Open grassland and wetland terrain. Known for migratory birds and large herbivore sightings. This is also the range where the boat safari operates, at the confluence of the Dhansiri and Brahmaputra rivers.

Jeep safari vehicles are permitted inside the park from 7:30 AM to 3:00 PM (or dusk). The park opens at 7:00 AM and closes at 5:00 PM or sunset.

Types of safari at Kaziranga National Park
• Jeep Safari: Authorized Maruti Gypsy vehicles hired on the spot from Jeep Safari Associations at Kohora and Bagori.
• Elephant Safari: Available at Mihimukh (Central Range) and Bagori (Western Range). Tickets are obtained previous evening from Kohora Range. If suffering from back pain, spinal injuries, stiff joints, or physical disability — elephant safari should be avoided.
No private vehicles are permitted inside the park under any circumstances.
How to book a Kaziranga National Park safari permit
Safari permits are booked through the official Kaziranga booking portal. Jeep Safari Associations at Kohora and Bagori manage vehicle hiring separately from the permit system and is done offline.

Safari rules at Kaziranga National Park
Safari conduct rules at Kaziranga are enforced by the armed escort and driver assigned to every vehicle and apply to all visitors regardless of nationality.
• Wear earth-toned, neutral colors — khaki and olive green are preferable inside the park.
• Keep silent when near wildlife. No shouting, whistling, or audio systems.
• Do not go on foot inside the park except on permitted trails. Stay in the vehicle on safari.
• Firearms, weapons, matchboxes, crackers, fire, fishing, and cooking inside the park are prohibited.
• Do not tease, feed, or disturb animals. Do not attract or approach wildlife.
• Do not collect or disturb any plant material inside the park.

Still and video cameras are permitted on payment of the applicable fees. Professional filming requires advance permission from the Field Director.
