Kaziranga National Park is spread across four districts along the southern bank of the Brahmaputra river. The park hosts the world's largest population of the Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros and over 90 percent of the global Asiatic wild buffalo population. The habitat is a unique combination of wetlands, grasslands, woodlands, and highlands formed by the annual flooding of the Brahmaputra.
Open Season: November 1 to April 30 — all four ranges operational but western Range (Bagori) opens from September 26 onward for jeep safari in a limited area
Wildlife
Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros — Kaziranga hosts the world's largest population, with over 2,600 individuals. Asiatic Wild Buffalo — Kaziranga holds over 90 percent of the global wild population. Swamp Deer (Barasingha) — significant population in the grasslands. Bengal Tiger — present in the reserve though significantly less visible than the large herbivores. Bird diversity is exceptional — 553 species recorded including Pallas's Fish Eagle, hornbills, and cranes.
Safari Ranges
Kaziranga is organised into four safari ranges, each with its own entry point and distinct landscape. No private vehicles are permitted inside the park — all visitors must hire authorised jeep safari vehicles from the Jeep Safari Associations at Kohora and Bagori. Every jeep safari vehicle is provided an armed escort.
Central Range — Kohora
The primary range. Located at Kohora on NH-37. Classic Kaziranga landscape of open grasslands, wetlands, and woodland. Highest concentration of rhino and wild buffalo. Elephant safari available at Mihimukh within this range. Most accessible range for travelers staying at Kohora.
Western Range — Bagori
Located at Bagori, west of Kohora on NH-37. Similar grassland and wetland terrain to the Central Range. Good rhino and wild buffalo sightings. This range opens from September 26 onward in limited areas — earlier than the other ranges.
Burapahar Range — Ghorakati
Located south of the main park area in the Burapahar hills. Hilly terrain with semi-evergreen forest — different landscape character from the grassland ranges. Known for Hoolock Gibbon and Bengal Florican sightings.
Eastern Range — Agaratoli
Located at Agaratoli, east of Kohora. Open grassland and wetland terrain. Known for migratory birds and large herbivore sightings.
Safari and Permits
Safari Timings
Jeep safari vehicles are permitted inside the park from 7:30 AM to 3:00 PM (or dusk). The park opens at 7:00 AM and closes at 5:00 PM or sunset.

Elephant Safari

• Locations: Mihimukh (Central Range) and Bagori (Western Range)
• Ticket booking: Tickets must be obtained the previous evening from Kohora Range on payment of the requisite fee — not booked online in advance.
Safari Vehicles
Two safari options operate at Kaziranga — Jeep Safari and Elephant Safari.
Jeep Safari: Authorized Maruti Gypsy vehicles hired on the spot from Jeep Safari Associations at Kohora and Bagori. All vehicles entering the park comes with armed escort.
Elephant Safari: Available at Mihimukh (Central Range) and Bagori (Western Range). Morning session only — 5:30 AM to 7:30 AM. Approximately 1 hour duration. Tickets obtained previous evening from Kohora Range. If suffering from back pain, spinal injuries, stiff joints, or physical disability — elephant safari should be avoided.
No private vehicles are permitted inside the park under any circumstances.
Permit Booking
Safari permits are booked through the official Kaziranga booking portal. Jeep Safari Associations at Kohora and Bagori manage vehicle hiring separately from the permit system and is offline.

Travel to Furkating (FKG) by train and hire a taxi to Kohora. If flying, Guwahati Airport (GAU) has the widest connectivity — travel onward to Kohora by taxi or bus. Buses from Guwahati Bus Stand run to Kohora.
