Gwalior is one of the oldest fortified sites in northern India. Built around a sandstone hill that has held a fort since at least the 6th century CE. The fort passed through the Kachchhapaghata and Tomar dynasties and subsequently the Mughals, Marathas, and British. Gwalior is equally known for its musical identity: the Gwalior Gharana is the oldest surviving school of Khayal singing, and Tansen, the greatest musician in Indian classical music history.
