Chennai

A city in the state of Tamil Nadu

Reviewed: 21 May 2026

Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu and the primary gateway to South India. Chennai sits at the center of a classical cultural tradition — Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam dance are practiced and performed here at the highest level. The city’s identity is shaped by the Dravidian culture of Tamil Nadu — ancient temples with elaborately carved gopurams, a cuisine built on rice, lentils, and tamarind.

The longest natural urban beach in Asia and the second longest in the world. Marina is less a conventional beach and more a vast public commons — political parties hold rallies here, fishermen haul in their catch in the early morning, and vendors sell corn, mango slices, and sundal along the promenade.

Getting Around

Partially practical. Google the nearest metro station to your starting point and destination. Enter the station, buy a ticket at the counter or vending machine, clear security, scan the ticket at the entry gate, walk towards platform and board the train. Use the same ticket again at the exit gate on destination.

Not practical. Local buses run across the city but routes are difficult to navigate without local knowledge.

Practical. Ride-hailing apps like Ola, Uber, and Rapido operate in Chennai, offering autos, hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs, and intercity cab options. Book through the app; fares are shown upfront. Pay by card in the app or in cash to the driver at the end of the trip.

Practical. For short distances (up to 5 km) or when apps are unavailable. Tell or show the auto driver your destination — they can refuse, in which case move to the next one. Agree on the fare (approx. ₹30–₹40 per km) before you get in. Know the distance to your destination via maps before negotiating.

Chennai on Ground

Margazhi Music and Dance Festival — December to January
One of the world’s most significant classical arts seasons, held annually in Chennai during the Tamil month of Margazhi. Over 2,000 concerts and dance performances are staged at sabhas (cultural halls) across the city.

Pongal — January 14–17
Tamil Nadu’s harvest festival, celebrated across Chennai over four days. On the main Pongal day (January 15), households boil the first rice of the new harvest in a clay pot until it overflows — the overflow symbolising abundance. The streets are decorated with kolam (geometric rice flour designs) in front of every home.

Kanjivaram (Kanchipuram) silk saree
The most significant textile of Tamil Nadu, produced in Kanchipuram approximately 75 km from Chennai. Pure silk sarees with a heavy gold and silver zari border and pallu, woven on traditional looms with interlocked silk threads. Each saree takes 2–7 days to complete.

Tanjore painting
A classical painting style from Thanjavur characterised by rich colors, gold foil decoration, and semi-precious stone inlay depicting Hindu deities. The technique uses a chalk and glue base on which the painting is built up in layers. Available at art galleries, government emporiums, and specialist shops across Chennai.

Chennai’s food identity is built on the Tamil Brahmin tradition of South Indian vegetarian cuisine and the coastal non-vegetarian traditions of the Tamil fishermen and trading communities. Banana leaf meals — rice with sambar, rasam, kootu, poriyal, pickle, papadum, and payasam served on a fresh banana leaf — are the formal midday meal. Chettinad cuisine — from the Chettiar merchant community of the Chettinad region — is the most internationally recognised Tamil food tradition, known for its use of unusual spices including kalpasi (stone flower), marathi mokku (dried flower pods), and star anise in complex meat and chicken preparations.
