Varkala

A coastal town in the state of Kerala

Reviewed: 18 May 2026

Varkala is a coastal town and the only place in southern Kerala where laterite cliffs are found directly adjacent to the Arabian Sea — a unique geological formation declared a national geo-heritage site. The cliffs, known as the Varkala Formation, are classified as Cenozoic sedimentary formations. Varkala simultaneously is a pilgrimage destination and a known backpacker beach town, a combination found at few places on the Indian coast.

Places

Varkala Cliff
A 15-metre high laterite cliff running along the northern coastline of Varkala, declared a national geological monument and geo-heritage site by the Geological Survey of India. The cliffs are the only formation of this type on the otherwise flat Kerala coastline.

Kappil Beach
A beach, where the Edava-Nadayara Lake — a coastal lagoon connected to the backwater system — meets the Arabian Sea. One of the few places in Kerala where the backwaters and the sea are separated only by a narrow strip of sand.

Anchuthengu Fort
A 17th century fort built by the English East India Company at Anchuthengu — their first trade settlement in Kerala, established with permission from the Queen of Attingal. The name Anchuthengu means five coconut trees in Malayalam, describing the original appearance of the site.

Getting Around

Not available.

Not practical. Intracity buses run across the city but routes are difficult to navigate without local knowledge.

Partially practical. Ride hailing apps like Ola and Uber coverage is inconsistent in Kozhikode. Book through the app — fares are shown upfront, pay by card in the app or in cash to the driver at the end of the trip.

Practical. For short distances (up to 5 km) or when apps are unavailable. Tell or show the auto driver your destination — they can refuse, in which case move to the next one. Agree on the fare (approx. ₹30–₹40 per km) before you get in. Know the distance to your destination via maps before negotiating.

Varkala on Ground

Vavu Beli — July
A Hindu ritual performed on Papanasam Beach on the new moon day of the Malayalam month of Karkadakam. Devotees offer food, water, and prayers to their ancestors (pitru) in the sea, in the belief that the sacred waters of Papanasam carry the offerings to the departed.

Sivagiri Pilgrimage — Dec 30 to Jan 1
An annual pilgrimage to the Sivagiri Mutt. Hundreds of thousands of devotees walk from their homes across Kerala to reach Sivagiri over three days.

Janardana Swami Temple Arattu — Annual
The annual festival of the Janardana Swami Temple, featuring a procession of the deity to the sea at Papanasam Beach accompanied by caparisoned elephants, percussion, and devotees. The most significant annual religious event specific to Varkala.

Onam — August or September
Kerala’s harvest festival, celebrated in Varkala with Onam Sadhya on banana leaf and pookalam decorations. The combination of Onam season and the Papanasam beach pilgrimage tradition brings numbers of domestic visitors to Varkala.

Ayurveda
Varkala has one of the highest concentrations of Ayurvedic treatment centres relative to its size of any town in Kerala. The Kerala tradition of Ayurveda — a classical Indian system of medicine using herbal preparations, medicated oils, and therapeutic treatments — is practiced here.

Varkala’s food is centred on fresh seafood — caught daily by local fishermen and available the same day at the cliff-side restaurants. The standard experience is to buy fish directly from the fishermen at the beach in the early morning as they return with the catch, then have it cooked to order at the adjacent restaurants. Red snapper, swordfish, tuna, kingfish, and prawns are commonly available depending on the season.
