Pushkar

Pushkar is a small town built around a sacred lake in a valley surrounded by the Aravalli hills. It is one of the five sacred lakes (Panch Sarovar) in Hinduism. The town has been a pilgrimage site for over two millennia and contains over 400 temples.

Places

Pushkar Lake and Ghats
The sacred lake at the center of Pushkar, surrounded by 52 ghats where ritual bathing takes place continuously. The lake is fed by natural springs and is considered one of the most sacred bodies of water in Hinduism.

Brahma Temple
One of the very few temples in the world dedicated to Brahma, the Hindu creator deity. The current structure dates to the 14th century though the site is believed to be much older. The temple is an active place of worship.

Savitri Temple
A temple dedicated to Savitri — the first wife of Brahma — located on the Ratnagiri hill above Pushkar town. The temple is reached by a ropeway (cable car) or by a steep 45-minute climb on foot.

Timing: Open daily, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM – 7:00 PM. Ropeway — 8.00 AM – 7.00 PM

Rangji Temple
A large Vaishnava temple dedicated to Rangji (a form of Vishnu), built in 1823 in a distinctive South Indian architectural style with a gopuram (tower gateway) — unusual in Rajasthan where North Indian temple architecture dominates.

Pushkar Camel Fair
The fair host thousands of camels, horses, and cattle for trading alongside folk performances and the sacred bathing on the lake.

Adhai Din ka Jhonpra
A 12th-century mosque built in 1192 using material from demolished temples, 15 km of Pushkar. The arched screen facade with intricate calligraphy and the columned prayer hall with repurposed Hindu and Jain pillars are architecturally significant.

Nasiyan Jain Temple
A Jain temple built in 1865 with an extraordinary upper floor — the Swarna Nagari (City of Gold) — containing a large diorama hall with gold-plated figures depicting Jain cosmology. The interior is one of the more unusual religious spaces in Rajasthan.

Getting There

Pushkar is accessible by road and has no railway station or airport. All rail and air access is through Ajmer, 15 km away. Whether arriving or departing, use Ajmer station codes and airport below — then travel the final 11 km to Pushkar by bus, auto, or taxi.

Getting Around

Not available.

Partially practical. Intercity buses run between Ajmer and Pushkar throughout the day.

Not practical. Ride hailing apps have limited availability in Pushkar.

Partially practical. As most of the Puskar is navigable on foot. For short distances (up to 5 km) or when apps are unavailable. Tell or show the auto driver your destination — they can refuse, in which case move to the next one. Agree on the fare (approx. ₹30–₹40 per km) before you get in. Know the distance to your destination via maps before negotiating.

Pushkar on Ground

Pushkar Camel Fair — Oct/Nov
A five-day livestock fair and cultural event on the desert grounds outside town — camel and horse trading, folk music and dance performances, and the sacred Kartik Purnima bathing in the lake on the final day.

Holi — March
Celebrated in Pushkar with colour play around the lake and temple areas; one of the more accessible and participatory Holi celebrations for international travelers in Rajasthan.

Gangaur — March/April
The 18-day Rajasthani festival observed in Pushkar with community rituals and processions.

Textile printing and embroidery
Pushkar market concentrates printed cotton and embroidered fabric from across Rajasthan; block-printed bedspreads, kurtas, and bags are the dominant street-level craft items.

Silver jewellery
Tribal and contemporary silver jewellery available in the Sadar Bazaar shops — a mix of Rajasthani, Gujarati, and international traveler-oriented designs.

Puppets (kathputli)
Hand-stitched Rajasthani string puppets produced by artisan families, sold in the Pushkar market; a craft tradition with roots in the Bhat community of Rajasthan.

Pushkar is entirely vegetarian. The food centers on standard Rajasthani vegetarian fare — dal baati churma, kachori, lassi, and fresh juice. The Sadar Bazaar area has a significant concentration of cafes and restaurants.
