Prayagraj

A city in the state of Uttar Pradesh

Reviewed: 31 Mar 2026

Prayagraj is a city at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythological Saraswati rivers. This confluence, called the Triveni Sangam, is the reason the city has been a pilgrimage center for over 2,000 years. Prayagraj is also the site of the Kumbh Mela — the largest human gathering on earth.

Getting Around

Not available.

Not practical. Intracity buses run across the city but routes are difficult to navigate without local knowledge.

Practical. Ride-hailing apps like Ola and Uber operate in Prayagraj, offering autos, hatchbacks, sedans, and intercity cab options. Book through the app — fares are shown upfront, pay by card in the app or in cash to the driver at the end of the trip.

Practical. For short distances (up to 5 km) or when apps are unavailable. Tell or show the auto driver your destination — they can refuse, in which case move to the next one. Agree on the fare (approx. ₹30–₹40 per km) before you get in. Know the distance to your destination via maps before negotiating.

Prayagraj on Ground

Kumbh Mela — every 12 years
The largest human gathering on earth, drawing tens of millions of pilgrims to the Sangam over 45–55 days; the Shahi Snan (royal bathing) dates draw the largest single-day crowds.

Magh Mela — Jan/Feb
A month-long pilgrimage fair at the Sangam held every year; smaller in scale than Kumbh but still draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims.

Basant Panchami — Jan/Feb
The festival of spring is marked at the Sangam with ritual bathing.

Chikan embroidery
Prayagraj artisans produce chikankari alongside the Lucknow tradition; the craft is present in the old city textile lanes.

Zari work
Gold and silver thread embroidery produced in the textile workshops of the old city, used for ceremonial garments.

Terracotta
A regional craft tradition producing decorative and ritual objects; present in craft markets in the Civil Lines area.

Prayagraj food centers on the street food of the Civil Lines area — chaat, kachori-sabzi, and the distinctive Allahabadi imarti (a deep-fried sweet similar to jalebi but made from black lentil batter). The Civil Lines area has a small concentration of multi-cuisine restaurants.
