Buses in India

Bus operators, types, ticket booking, station, and intercity travel

Reviewed: 27 Mar 2026

Bus travel connects cities, towns, and rural areas across India and forms the largest passenger transport network in the country. Buses reach destinations that trains do not — including smaller towns, hill stations, and regions without rail connectivity.

Unlike Indian Railways, there is no single centralized booking system for buses. Services are operated by a combination of state transport corporations and private operators and various aggregator platforms.

When buses make sense over trains
Buses are the practical choice when a direct train does not exist on your route, when train tickets are unavailable, or when the destination is a hill station or smaller town accessible only by road.

When trains are the better option
On long overnight routes where both options exist, trains are generally more comfortable. For journeys exceeding 8–10 hours, a reserved train berth is preferable to a bus seat.

Types

Bus services in India operate at two levels — state-run and private. Both types run on intercity routes and are bookable through aggregator platforms.

State-run
State transport corporations operate scheduled services within and between states. Each state has its own fleet operating under its transport corporation — KSRTC (Karnataka), MSRTC (Maharashtra), RSRTC (Rajasthan), UPSRTC (Uttar Pradesh), and so on. These services follow fixed routes, standardized pricing, and regulated operations. State-run buses range from basic ordinary services to air-conditioned premium buses.

Private operators
Private operators run scheduled intercity services, often on the same routes as state corporations. Service standards, vehicle quality, punctuality, and onboard experience vary widely by operator. Well-established app based private operators like ZingBus, FlixBus, NeuGo, IntrCity maintain consistent quality.

Service Formats

Ordinary Buses
Ordinary buses are basic services with simple seating, frequent stops, and a priority on coverage over comfort. They connect cities, towns, and villages across all states and are the most widely available format. Not suitable for long intercity journeys where comfort matters.

Air-Conditioned Buses
AC buses operate between major cities with more defined schedules, limited stops, and controlled boarding at designated pickup points. Both state corporations and private operators run AC services on high-demand corridors.

Sleeper Buses
Sleeper buses are used primarily for overnight long-distance routes. Berths are configured as lower and upper, similar in concept to train sleeper class but on a bus. Quality is mostly standardized across app based operators. On long overnight routes where a train is not available, a reputable operator's sleeper bus is a workable alternative.

Booking

Unlike train booking, there is no single official platform for all bus tickets. Aggregator apps consolidate state-run and private operator inventory in one place and are the most practical booking method for international travelers.

Online Booking — Aggregator Platforms
The following platforms list services from both state transport corporations and private operators across India.

• redBus — the largest bus aggregator in India; covers most major intercity routes
• Zingbus — focuses on premium services on various routes; consistent standards
• FlixBus — operates its own fleet on select intercity corridors; consistent standards
• AbhiBus — aggregator with broad state-run and private operator coverage
• MakeMyTrip / Cleartrip — also list intercity bus options alongside flights and trains

Booking (only 4*+ rated buses) through an aggregator gives you a seat number and boarding point details on your ticket or text message. Most tickets become available a few weeks before departure, and booking several days or weeks in advance is not necessary.

Counter Booking
Tickets can be purchased in person at bus station counters. State transport corporation counters are located at bus terminals. Private operator counters exist at select terminals. Counter booking is straightforward for same-day travel.

On-Board Ticketing
Some state-run ordinary buses allow ticket purchase directly from the conductor on board. This is not available on reserved AC or sleeper services — those require advance online booking.

Payment
Online bookings accept international debit and credit cards on all platforms. Cash payments are accepted at physical bus station counters.

Travel

Boarding
Online booked tickets specify a boarding point — this is where you board, not necessarily the main bus terminal. Private operators frequently use designated pickup points at specific intersections, hotels, or landmarks in the city rather than the central bus stand. Confirm your boarding point on the ticket or via the operator's confirmation message or via call before travel.

On Board
Luggage storage is available under seats, in overhead racks, or in compartments beneath the bus. Large luggage is placed in under-bus storage compartments. Luggage limits are not strictly enforced on most services.

Ordinary buses have no onboard facilities. AC and sleeper buses on longer routes have a brief stop (20 minutes) at a highway restaurant for a meal or toilet break — this is the standard rest stop format on Indian overnight bus routes.

Timing
Bus departure and arrival times are less reliable than trains. Factor potential delays into any onward connections.
